Storas na h-Oigrigh Gaelic Immersion Internship for Youth - Deadline July 13
|
|
Five young adults are invited to take part in a unique paid learning experience called Stòras na h-Oigrigh. This program will introduce them to the Gaelic cultural foundations of Nova Scotia with a focus on community based cultural expression and the idiomatic speech. From one generation to another, Gaelic cultural expression, particularly art forms such as song, storytelling, instrumental music and dance, along with social knowledge, have been primarily taught through oral transmission and the seanchas tradition. Consequently, this program will be conducted entirely through Gaelic using the Gàidhlig aig Baile method of language teaching and will include visits with tradition bearers from the community. This social Gaelic learning experience will run from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm from August 10 to August 21st. Participants will receive an honorarium for their apprenticeship participation. Young people aged 16 to 25, who have demonstrated a high level of motivation in their pursuit of knowledge of Gaelic language and culture are invited to apply. The morning sessions will focus on a particular topic and be delivered through TIP sessions. In the afternoon the apprentices will visit with a tradition bearer to further develop their topic area, or will participate in a relevant activity in one of the Museum’s historic buildings. Jim Watson and Mary Jane Lamond will facilitate these sessions. Interested individuals should send a letter describing their previous experience of Gaelic language and Gaelic culture in Nova Scotia. They should describe their level of competency in Gaelic, why they would like to take part of this program and what talents they will bring to the group. The deadline for applications is Monday, July 13th. Stòras na h-Oigrigh is funded by the Highland Village Musem/ An Clachan Gàidhealach, with financial assistance from the Office of Gaelic Affairs. Inquiries and applications can be directed to Rodney Chaisson at the Highland Village Museum/ An Clachan Gàidhealach, 4119 Highway 223, Iona, NS, B2C 1A3 by phone at 902-725-2272, e-mail: chaissrs@gov.ns.ca, or fax 902-725-2227.
